ImmortalsDirector Tarsem Singh's stylish, ultra-violent action film "Immortals" has beaten Adam Sandler's gender-bending comedy "Jack & Jill" and Clint Eastwood and Leonardo Dicaprio's "J. Edgar" biopic to the top of the box office.

The 3D epic, which stars British actor Henry Cavill as ancient Greek hero Theseus and Mickey Rourke as bloodthirsty villain King Hyperion, hauled in $32 million in its opening weekend to take first place from Sandler's new release, which claimed a solid $26 million.

Former number one "Puss in Boots" fell to third place, comedy "Tower Heist" came in fourth and the new "J. Edgar" Hoover biopic, directed by Eastwood, finished in fifth place with $11.5 million.
