Sean Penn is to step back behind the camera to direct Robert De Niro in "The Comedian."
 
The Oscar winner, who last directed a film in 2007 when he took charge of "Into The Wild," will adapt Art Linson and Jeffrey Ross' screenplay about a comic sentenced to community service for lashing out at a heckler.
 
Shooting is scheduled to begin next spring.
