Rapper Talib Kweli joined campaigners in New York on Thursday night to lend his support to the ongoing social equality protests and help "spread the information" about the cause.

The star joined hundreds of activists in downtown Manhattan for the Occupy Wall Street march to speak out against corporate greed, and he entertained protesters by taking control of a microphone to spit a new track called "Distractions," about social issues currently facing America.

And Kweli is proud to be associated with such a movement in his native Big Apple.

He tells MTV News, "There's no other place in New York City to be. People are taking their destiny in their own hands. This is one of the most American, if not the most American, things that I've ever seen.

"When I see things like Occupy Wall Street, I just try to align myself with things that make sense. Shame on me if I know something and don't spread it, you know? If I know, it becomes my responsibility to spread the information."

Other famous faces, including actors Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Penn Badgley, have also joined the ranks of campaigners in recent days.
