Sandra Bullock's ex-husband Jesse James has called off his engagement to TV tattooist Kat Von D.

The stars, who began dating two months after James divorced Bullock last year, became engaged in January and were planning a summer wedding on the one-year anniversary of their romance. James and the LA Ink star have been dogged by rumors of a split since a report was published in Life & Style magazine last month - speculation they denied at the time.

But, now they have confirmed they have parted ways, citing their long-distance love for the break-up - Von D lives in Los Angeles, while James is based in Austin, Texas.

James tells People.com, "I'm so sad because I really love her. The distance between us was just too much."

Addressing the split in a post on Twitter.com, Von D writes, "I am no longer w (with) Jesse, and out of respect for him, his family and myself, thats (sic) all the info I'd like to share. Thanks for respecting that."
