Tour Keeps Roger Daltrey From Committing To U.K. Version Of 'The Voice'

Roger DaltreyThe Who rocker Roger Daltrey met with TV bosses in Britain to negotiate a role as a judge on the U.K. version of The Voice, but had to pull out of talks due to touring commitments.

Despite previously slamming TV talent shows, Daltrey was one of the frontrunners to take a seat on the rejuvenated American Idol when Simon Cowell left to concentrate on his American The X Factor show, but decided the concept was not right for him.

He started negotiations in Britain to sit as a panellist on The Voice, a hit show in the U.S., in which the judges choose their favourites without seeing them, and although Daltrey was keen to be part of the project, his touring schedule got in the way.

He tells Britain's Daily Mail, "My agent wheeled me in to see the American Idol people but I didn't want to do it. I have been talking to The Voice. I quite liked the idea but I will be on tour when they start filming.

"I'm not sure I would have been any good. I could have listened to 100 voices and said I don't like any of them. And I would hate to really destroy someone; that's what I don't like about those shows. There are people in them who would never win a karaoke competition and it's public humiliation.

"With The Voice, I liked the idea you have to choose the voice before seeing the person, but a great voice is one in 5,000; otherwise it's a mass of mediocrity."
