NBA Fines Kobe Bryant $100,000 For 'Offensive & Inexcusable' Slur

April 14th, 2011 8:28am EDT

Kobe BryantKobe Bryant has been fined $100,000 by high-ranking basketball officials for using a derogatory homophobic slur during the telecast of an end-of-season game on Tuesday night.

Bryant has apologized for his outburst, insisting he never meant to offend the gay and lesbian community - but his statement wasn't enough for National Basketball Association (NBA) bosses.

Calling the Los Angeles Lakers star's on-court comment "offensive and inexcusable", league commissioner David Stern announced the fine on Wednesday.

Stern says, "While I'm fully aware that basketball is an emotional game, such a distasteful term should never be tolerated. Accordingly, I have fined Kobe $100,000. Kobe and everyone associated with the NBA know that insensitive or derogatory comments are not acceptable and have no place in our game or society."

Bryant has revealed he plans to appeal the fine.
