The A-Team Hollywood screenwriter and "The A-Team" producer Stephen Cannell has lost his battle with skin cancer at the age of 69.

The star died on Thursday at his home in California, with his wife of 46 years, Marcia, by his side.

A statement released by the producer's family reads: "Stephen J. Cannell passed away at his home in Pasadena on Thursday evening due to complications associated with melanoma. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones.

"Stephen was the pillar of strength within his family and he touched everyone he met. He will be most deeply missed."

Cannell worked on a number of top TV shows throughout the 1970s and '80s, and created James Garner's private investigator character Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files. The show, which won an Emmy for Best Drama Series, ended in 1980 after six years on air.

He was also known for helping to create popular shows "The Greatest American Hero," "21 Jump Street" and "Baretta."

He is survived by his wife Marcia, their three kids and three grandchildren.
