Tyler PerryActor/director Tyler Perry is still fuming over his spat with Spike Lee - he's adamant his fellow moviemaker should have spoken to him privately instead of criticizing him in public.

Lee sparked fury last year when he accused Perry of producing films that are a step backwards for African-American cinema and resort to "coonery and buffoonery".  Perry brushed off the criticisms at the time, but he is still upset over the comments - and insists directors who "speak down" to black viewers are far more "insulting" than his movies.

He tells Empire magazine, "I'm not offended by (Lee's comments). I was more taken aback because I have such regard and respect for Spike that I wished it had been a conversation that he had had with me privately before he made it public."

"In black culture in America there are different classes of color and education, and that is why there are 30,000 people seeing my plays every week and an August Wilson show is closing down on Broadway. It's because I'm speaking to the masses in a way they understand and not speaking down to them and not saying, 'You're a coon or a buffoon because you enjoy this.' That's insulting on so many levels."
