Carrie Underwood Wins Double Gold At CMT Music Awards
Carrie Underwood was named country queen at the 2010 CMT Music Awards on Wednesday as she scooped two prizes at the TV network's annual ceremony.
The former American Idol winner took home the Performance of the Year trophy for her rendition of Temporary Home in a CMT special, as well as the biggest prize of the night, Video of the Year, for Cowboy Casanova. The event in Nashville, Tennessee was kicked off by host Kid Rock who told the crowd, "The party has just begun!" before performing a medley of his hits with several surprise guests, including Hank Williams, Jr., Martina McBride and Kellie Pickler.
The rowdy rocker was later seen smoking a cigar onstage, and cracking vulgar jokes - including a jibe directed at popular trio Lady Antebellum, who he dubbed "the hillbilly Fleetwood Mac." He quipped: "But I don't suspect they do drugs or sleep with each other."
However, the group took the joke in good humor and were later celebrating after winning the Group Video of the Year for their hit Need You Now. Picking up their statuette, Antebellum star Dave Haywood announced: "Tonight's all about the fans. Thank you fans!"
Other honors went to Miranda Lambert, who won Female Video of the Year for White Liar, and Keith Urban, whose 'Til Summer Comes Around promo was named Male Video of the Year.
Urban thanked his actress wife Nicole Kidman, who was in the audience, gushing: "Baby girl, I love you so much," before paying tribute to those dealing with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. He added, "I want to send my deepest love and prayers out to all the families around the Gulf, who are going through an insane time right now. We've never seen anything like this - emotions I can't even find words for as I watch this thing happening on TV."
Retiring duo Brooks & Dunn, who will split for good later this year, received the Duo Video of the Year award for Indian Summer, while Luke Bryan accepted the Breakthrough Video of the Year prize for Do I. The Collaborative Video of the Year honor went to Blake Shelton for his Hillbilly Bone clip, featuring Trace Adkins.
Country darling Taylor Swift, who won two awards last year, went home empty-handed after losing out in the three categories she was nominated in.
