Guitar legend Jeff Beck has silenced one of the longest-running rumors in rock - he was not the inspiration for This Is Spinal Tap. The former Yardbirds star has long been linked to the spoof documentary, with gossips suggesting he was the basis for Christopher Guest's character, Nigel Tufnel.
However, Beck is adamant the rumors are untrue - and he only inspired Tufnel's hairstyle. He tells Undercover Music News, "I think the hair was (based on mine) but it ends there. I knew that Christopher Guest had been watching me but Nigel is based on different characters from glam rock. Ironically, I was the only one who wasn't glam rock. I loved every minute of that movie."
And Beck reveals he's such a fan of the classic 1984 comedy, he sparked complaints from fellow cinema-goers when he first saw it on the big screen.
He adds, "I heard it on recommendation. I was watching it at a cinema in Westwood (California) and I was laughing so loud people were telling me to shut up. It was the funniest thing. They couldn't see the funny side of it."
