Elvis PresleyA piece of hair belonging to Elvis Presley has failed to attract a buyer at auction. The bizarre piece of rock memorabilia, encased at the center of a gold disc, was expected to fetch up to $960 when it went under the hammer on Thursday - but bidding failed to meet the reserve price.

The seller, a music fan from Gloucestershire, England, admits he bought the strand "on a whim" during a previous televised auction.

A spokesperson for auction house Chorley's admits such unusual items are losing popularity with collectors, explaining, "These more fun items are not doing as well in the current market as the more serious antiques. It's just one of those things."

A lock of the Jailhouse Rock hit-maker's hair sold for $15,000 at an auction in Chicago, Illinois in October.
