, inspired by the classic Universal film
, premieres in theaters today. It continues the tradition of films based on lycanthropy since Werewolf of London
in 1935. There has been a plethora of werewolf films since, and here are some particularly memorable ones.Dog Soldiers
: Like 28 Days Later
, Dog Soldiers was a gritty horror movie from overseas that helped resurrect the genre for another decade. Dog Soldiers also helped boost its director's career - Neil Marshall has since directed horror films The Descent
. 28 Days Later's director, Danny Boyle
, has since helmed horror film Slumdog Millionaire
An American Werewolf in London
: Almost 30 years later, An American Werewolf in London's transformation scene is still considered one of the best using prosthetics and camera technique. It's a spot that will likely never be topped, as studios have since developed computer graphics in werewolf movies - and even then, they cannot capture the visceral moment like An American Werewolf in London did.
: Many horror films featuring metamorphosis use it as an analogy to puberty, but few films did it as well as Ginger Snaps. Two sisters attempt to keep their close bonds, even as one slowly becomes a deranged monster.
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
: Not only did the movie feature the original Wolfman Lon Chaney Jr.
, but it also starred Bela Lugosi
and Glenn Strange
in their famous roles as Dracula and The Frankenstein Monster. Vincent Price
later "appeared" as the Invisible Man. The Brotherhood of the Wolf
: While the story takes a realistic slant on the werewolf story, the over-the-top fighting scenes and slow-motion sequences would make The Matrix
blush. It also features Mark Dacascos
- so if you want to see the Iron Chef America Chairman kick some ass, this is your movie.
: Gary Busey
? Terry O'Quinn
? Corey Haim
? How could you not watch this movie? Okay, I got nothing. But still, this Stephen King
adaptation is a classic werewolf flick.
: Another puberty parallel, Teen Wolf took the mid-80's by storm: a sequel
, cartoon spin-off
- I'm sure there was at least one toothpaste flavor involved. Also amusing is the father explaining lycanthropy "can skip a generation," and the lead character falling in love with a girl nicknamed "Boof."
Trick 'r Treat
: Anna Paquin
dresses up as Little Red Riding hood in a segment of this horror medley. I don't want to spoil it for anyone that hasn't seen this underrated movie, but let's just say the results are anything but expected.
