The first half of this seasons Vampire Diaries ended with Elena trapped in her car after a mysterious vampire had stood in the middle of the road, makng her crash. As the vampire made its way towards her, all Elena could do was scream for help. The vampire approached the car and then disappeared, and then Damon arrived to save the day. Damon realized that Elena had found out about Katherine, so he took her on a road trip with him. Even though he could have forced Elena to stay with him because she left her vervain necklace at Stefan's Damon managed to talk Elena into staying with him on his trip.

Damon introduced Elena to a bartender slash witch he used to be involved with, Bree. Finally, the audience learned the reason for this road trip. Damon wanted to work on getting the tomb open again. Bree reminded him that it was impossible. While Damon caught Elena arguing with Stefan about Katherine, Bree called someone to tell them Damon was in town. The someone turned out to be Lex's boyfriend, who Elena learned had become a vampire in his hopes to send forever with her. Lex's boyfriend almost killed Damon but finally listened to Elena's pleas. Damon ripped Bree's heart out for betraying him, but not before she could tell him that the original spell book could open the tomb where Katherine was being held.

Speaking of the tomb, Bonnie ended up outside of it while trying to regain her powers. Stefan managed to get Bonnie away from the tomb and she admitted she could hear voices coming from the inside. Elena returned to Stefan's house and they talked. He admitted to saving her from the crash that killed her parents. He explained that he'd only had time to save her because her father had asked him to. As if that wasn't enough of a revelation, Stefan had learned that Elena was adopted. The only thing Elena's gained out this information so far is that it kept her from being yelled at by her Aunt Jenna.

While Elena and Stefan were making up, Damon was having a drink in a bar with Jeremy's teacher Alaric not far away. It turns out that Damon killed Alaric's wife Isobel. He watched Damon, not attacking him just yet.

Next week, a school dance ends with Elena running from the vampire that caused her second car crash.
