John Mayer has opened about his split from on/off girlfriend Jennifer Aniston, insisting he has "never really gotten over" the break-up, but he just didn't see himself settling down with the Hollywood actress.

The couple began dating in early 2008, but called off their romance later that year. They subsequently got back together, but ended the relationship for good last March.

And the rocker insists he was the one who ended the love affair, admitting he couldn't imagine spending the rest of his life with the former Friends star.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I've never really gotten over it. It was one of the worst times of my life. I have this weird feeling, a pride thing, for the people I've had relationships with. What would I be saying to Jen, who I think is f**king fantastic, if I said to her, 'I don't dislike you. In fact, I like you extremely well. But I have to back out of this because it doesn't arc over the horizon. This is not where I see myself for the rest of my life, this is not my ideal destiny.'"
