Last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries addressed the reason behind Bonnie's witch side story and why Damon had come back to Mystic Falls. Bonnie's ancestor Emily had tried to communicate with Bonnie through her dreams, but finally settled for possessing Bonnie when the Caroline, Elena and Bonnie had a séance. It turned out that Emily had been Katherine's handmaiden, and had cast a spell that saved Katherine and a lot of other vampires from death by trapping them under a church.

Damon's reason for coming back to Mystic Falls was that he wanted to get Bonnie's crystal to release Katherine. However, ghost Emily destroyed the crystal before he could release the vampires. After Emily left Bonnie's body, an angry Damon then attacked Bonnie and Stefan saved her by giving her his blood. Damon admitted to Stefan how much Katherine had meant to him, and with no reason to stay in town anymore, said he would leave.

Elena watched Stefan save Bonnie and realized she wanted to be with him. Stefan rejected Elena and told her he wanted to leave town even while she begged him not to. With Stefan's approval, Elena confessed to Bonnie everything that had been going on.

While Elena and Stefan might not have been becoming any closer as a couple, Matt and Caroline did. Matt admitted to Caroline he didn't like her, but had still stayed with her the other night. The potential new couple ended the episode in bed with junk food.

A mysterious new history teacher gave Jeremy an assignment that required him to dig into the town's past. He also provided Jeremy and Elena's Aunt Jenna with enough entertainment to keep her out of the house while the séance happened. Just as Aunt Jenna was ready for bed, however, her dead ex-boyfriend Logan showed up. Someone had turned him into a vampire.

The next episode appears to feature Stefan and Elena hooking up and Logan the vampire attacking people, so it's a good assumption that neither Damon nor Stefan is leaving town anytime soon.
