Rap legends Public Enemy are on their way to achieving a fan-funded album - they have pulled in donations of $50,000. Last month, the group agreed a deal with SellaBand, an online fan funding engine, which gives devotees the chance to finance their idols in exchange for albums, meet-and-greets and even a cut of the profits. Each fan was asked to offer up $25, which goes towards funding the latest CD from the hip-hop band.
Generous fans flocked to the website to offer their own cash so they can hear new Public Enemy material - with $50,000 worth of donations rolling in over four week period. The group is aiming to raise $250,000 to finance the new record.
Public Enemy is the first high profile band to sign up with the Holland-based brand. It will be the group's first record since 2007.
