'The Girls Next Door': Say Hello To Hef's New Bunnies

It is difficult, at first glance, to tell these three new girls apart, which is understandable as two of them are twins. Perky-breasted twins. Every man's dream. Hef's old girlfriend Holly found Karissa and Kristina Shannon during the 55th Anniversary Playmate search. They are certainly at home in the mansion, and for most of the episode we follow them around as they promote themselves and the Playboy brand. They express to the audience that they would like to be seen as individuals as opposed to "the Hef twins," but they spend most of the episode stressing how much alike they are. They say they are so close that they are like "the same person", but they don't bother to really highlight how they are different - which does nothing but reinforce their interchangeability to viewers. They are twins. They are hot. There is little else to say.
Crystal, Hef's number-one Playmate, however, stands apart from the rest of the girls for a few reasons. Like a Mormon's first wife, she appears to have the deepest emotional connection with Hefner. They both suffered the loss of significant others, and they seem to have bonded on this fact. She, like Holly, also seems to be more intimate and loving with Hef. She is shown on camera with him alone more often than the twins, and she works for $10 an hour in the Mansion's scrapbook room. Scrapbooking is a dear old-man hobby of Hef's and Crystal works there, mostly, it seems because she wants to do something that will bring her closer to him. It appears that she is a girlfriend because she has something in common with Mr. Hefner, while the twins are there because… well, they're twins.
This new season of The Girls Next Door is clearly for promotion and our general entertainment. Though the first episode was to promote the new girls, Hef, in true Playboy style, steals the show. He sits in on a photo shoot with the twins doing a naked car wash (naturally!) He compliments the girls on a job well done, and sits down next to another old guy - one of his long-time photographers. The best line in the show has to be from this guy, turning from his camera to Hefner saying, "We didn't do too bad for ourselves, huh?" Pushing 90 and still photographing naked 20-year-olds? Not a bad life, indeed.
But if this show proves anything, it is that even if you might not agree with his lifestyle, or if you find his notions of beauty to be rather outdated, Hugh Hefner is probably the luckiest, happiest old man on earth... and will probably be around for at least another 10 years. If you wonder if these new girls are worth watching at all, let me just say that when there are naked girls running around, there is never a dull moment. I expect this season to be anything but boring.
