'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Recap: 'The Hot Towel'

Curb Your EnthusiasmLarry David took a break from 'Seinfeld' this week to deliver an episode in the classic 'Curb' motif of his inability to successfully maneuver through any social situation.

It's not that Larry's intentions weren't good throughout the episode. Sure, he ruined a present he gave to Ted and Mary by horning in on their dinner, but at least he got them a nice gift. He keeps interrupting his doctor in his spare time, but that's mostly by accident. Yes, he massively offended Christian Slater, but at least he was trying to ensure everyone else at the party got their fair share of caviar. He may have horribly embarrassed Jeff and Susie's daughter, but at least he was trying to save her from any more self-inflicted public humiliation.

Yes, Larry had the tender heart of an intrepid lion as he fumbled his way through a mousetrap-filled maze of social mores in this episode. Never more so than when he attempted to rekindle a relationship with an old girlfriend, only to later discover that she already had a boyfriend.

This bit of miscommunication, and the resulting rage of Larry's tryst's lover, led to the funniest moment of the season thus far as Larry was sent scampering through his neighborhood, half-naked in workout clothes, desperately searching for some kind of sanctuary in the face of a potential beat down.

This led to something of an 'Everyman' scenario during which Larry had to atone for the episode's sins as he faced the ire of his doctor and Ted Danson as he tried in haste to escape the fury of a wronged lover. Larry almost always has to answer for what he does in any such episode, but never in such grand fashion as he did last night, trolling through suburbia in a fit of fear.

Of course, Larry wasn't a complete bundle of joy in this episode. His screaming at Susie's daughter to "Shut the F--- Up" as her singing woke him up after a night spent at the Greene's was harsh even for Larry, but hilarious all the same. And the moment that started the episode, his ridiculing a fellow passenger on an airplane for wearing shorts, made his subsequent scalding with a hot towel feel deserved.

While Larry's curmudgeonly ways were a bit abrasive this episode, it's hard not to agree with his brazen desire for his strict set of rules to be followed. It's that relatability that has always turned Larry into something of a hero in this series, and last night, made us feel his pain when he finally ran into that miffed boyfriend.
