showed the audience that Sam and Dean were really set on going separate ways and not just pulling another quick time apart. Dean hunted while Sam got a job bartending and started going by the name Keith. In spite of not speaking the entire episode, the brothers both had encounters with archangels.
Dean got a visit from Castiel when Cas tried to set up a meeting with the archangel that killed him. Cas admitted that he most likely wouldn't survive another encounter with Raphael, so Dean suggested they go out and meet some women. Dean then found out Castiel was a virgin and found a brothel and took him to it. Castiel made it to a room with one woman, but freaked her out when he told her why her father left her family.
Cas and Dean went back to focusing on meeting the archangel. They found a way to trap him inside of his vessel, which saved him from killing Cas again. Cas asked Raphael where God was and he said that God was dead. Castiel pointed out that something brought him back and Raphael suggested that maybe it was the Lucifer. He told Cas that Lucifer was recruiting as many rebel angels as he could, after all.
Sam tried to live as Keith the bartender, but his demon hunting ways still followed him around. He told Bobby about a potential case and Bobby reluctantly sent in a group of hunters. The hunters tried to get Sam to come with them but he wouldn't. Lindsey, a girl that worked with Sam at the bar tried to get to know Sam, but he managed to keep her at a distance. The hunters returned to the bar, with one of the three dead and the other two told Sam they knew what he was. They forced Sam to drink some demon blood in an effort to get him strong enough to help them go after the rest of the demons. Sam managed to overpower them and went back on the road, alone.
Alone in his hotel room, Sam saw Jessica in bed with him. Jessica eventually turned into Lucifer. Lucifer explained his current body was only temporary. Sam was his true vessel. Sam swore he would kill himself before he let Lucifer possess him and Lucifer promised to bring him back every time. Lucifer said he would be completely honest and Sam would still consent to him anyway. If Sam became Lucifer's vessel that would be enough to make Dean agree to be Michael's vessel, and that could be where this entire season is headed. Still, if learning he's the vessel for Lucifer isn't enough to make Sam call Dean, I don't know what it's going to take.
Next Week, Dean visits an apocalyptic future where Cas spends most of his time stoned, future Dean leads a group of human against zombies, and future Sam is possessed by the devil.
