Actress Emma Watson was destined to play Harry Potter's top witch pal - she's related to one of Britain's most magical ladies.

The young star's ancestors included a 16th century witch, who was excommunicated from the Church of England for dabbling with the dark arts, according to researchers at family tree website Ancestry.com.

Joan Playle was convicted of witchcraft in 1592.
