The ceremony honored individuals and organizations which have made considerable contributions to make the planet more sustainable for future generations.
Award organizers named the 2009 event Heal the World, after Jackson's song of the same name, and his brother Jermaine Jackson was on hand to receive a posthumous prize on the late superstar's behalf.
The "Beat It" singer was recognized for his "many social and humanitarian engagements, but also... his incredible musical legacy".
Jermaine also took to the stage to perform "Smile", the same tune he sang at his sibling's Los Angeles memorial on July 7.
Other celebrities present at the event include former U.S. athlete Carl Lewis and actress Andie Macdowell, who hosted the evening.
