'Weeds' Recap: 'Van Nuys'

WeedsWhen Andy finally calls Nancy out in this episode week's episode of "Weeds," in the gentlest way, fans had to breath a sigh of relief. That woman has to take responsibility for her own mistakes rather than shouting that the world has forced her to this place. No one forced her to be a drug dealer and to get substantially more invested in the criminal world; she does it to herself. And when Andy says that to her, and she finally admits the truth, there's a moment where you believe she could actually change if she wanted to. But this is "Weeds" so you know better than that.

After the murder of Agent Till last week, Nancy seems to be locked within herself. She goes to her gynecologist (Alanis Morissette!) and considers whether or not to get an abortion. This episode is all about a choice: get an abortion and run away while she can, or even keep the baby and run, or stay and keep going down the rabbit hole. It's just a shame that Andy, the current white knight, can only sit helplessly by trying to get money for the family by creepy prostitution while Nancy wholeheartedly jumps into madness. She plants pretty herbs and flowers, hoping that one thing in her life might grow and thrive, but instead they all die and so do her hopes. So she runs ... in the wrong direction.

EstebanMeanwhile her children go mad in their own ways. Silas deals with Doug, who keeps messing up all their chances for a real business. They find a 'drug agent' who can help them get medical marijuana and Doug almost blows the deal. They have an insult fight which leads Silas to punch Doug after implying he killed his father, and peace is made after sincere apologies. It's amazing how much Judah is still very alive on this show. Andy tries desperately to 'be' Judah, both for Nancy and for Maggie who will give him Judah's saved money. He goes on a date with her, mirroring her date with Judah, and they have very sad sex on the beach as homeless men are all around. But Andy does it for his new love, for his new hope in the family, and it makes him heroic. And pathetic. He does both of those things rather well.

Shane gets back at his teacher with the help of Ignacio and Isabelle, killing his bird and stealing electronics from him after regaining the pot. This leads Nancy to try mothering again, by having him return the stuff and apologize. Of course this never lasts either, as the teacher assaults her son and Nancy shows him how accustomed she is to her new dangerous world by threatening him. It's kind of awesome. Celia moves into the garage and finds Sucio's body (aw). She gets pictures of him being destroyed by Esteban's goons and uses it as leverage against Nancy. It's too bad Rudolfo sent her away, because she is ruthless enough to make his rebellion actually work!

So where does it end? Nancy tearfully agrees with Andy that they can run, but instead of writing goodbye to Esteban she writes goodbye to Andy and moves in with her mobster boyfriend. With Shane. So she leaves Silas with Andy, Doug, and Celia? What? Well he is eighteen, he doesn't need to be under her hand anymore. Poor Shane. You chose death over life, Nancy, and Andy was right to tell you it was all your choice. It's all you. And now you just have to deal with it. Unfortunately, so does the rest of your family.

"Weeds" is on Showtime Monday nights at 10:00 PM EST.
