More than 120,000Michael Jackson fans-per-second visited the website of Los Angeles' Staples Center for the first 90 minutes of Friday's memorial ticket giveaway.

Devotees were told they could register for free tickets for next week's tribute via the site at a press conference on Friday morning, and the fans weren't hanging around - 90 minutes after the tickets became available over 500 million people had visited the site, which briefly crashed a couple of times. An additional server was brought in to accommodate the volume of traffic.

More than 8,000 fans will hear if they've been lucky enough to land a pair of tickets on Sunday. The registration closes at 6pm on Saturday.

A celebration of the late pop superstar's life will take place at Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday.
