Nine Inch NailsNine Inch Nails have apparently bowed out of the U.S. live music scene with a rousing final performance at the 2009 Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee.

The rockers announced plans for an indefinite hiatus in December, when they warned fans their recent tour with the reunited Jane's Addiction would be their last for the forseeable future.

They hit the stage at Bonnaroo in the early hours of Sunday morning when frontman Trent Reznor made the revelation to the thousands of fans in attendance.

But he urged devotees not to get depressed about their final concert - and promised he would be back to rock once again.

He told the crowd, "It just dawned on me that this is our last show ever in the United States.

"Don't be sad. I'll keep going. But I think I'm going to lose my mind if I keep doing this, and I have to stop."

The band is due to head to Europe and Asia this summer for their Wave Goodbye Tour, a series of concerts held to mark the 20th anniversary of their 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine.
