'Weeds' Is Back With A New Season

"Weeds" is back, and I'll admit I was a little skeptical about this season. Last season seemed to lose some of what made the show so special, making it more of a drama than a comedy and forgetting the tight, sharp dialogue the fans loved so much. Nancy is pregnant with her Mexican Drug Lord boyfriend's baby, which came right in time to spare her life since he found out she was snitching. Her sons are both involved in marijuana, with Silas growing it and Shane secretly selling it, and Andy came to the conclusion he might be in love with his sister-in-law. Oh, and Celia was kidnapped by her estranged daughter Quinn. All caught up? Yay.
This episode brings "Weeds" back to where it belongs, the darkest of comedy, and everyone is on in terms of acting and selling the witty, bitter dialogue. Nancy now knows what it means to be those slave girls they were passing through her tunnel, because she is nothing more than an object for Esteban to get his son out of her. He makes it clear she will be likely dying as soon as the baby is born, and she just looks surprised that her sexy wiles ceased working on him. In fact, Nancy gets called out on most of her stupidity this week, which is delightful. She just sails through the worst of situations, somehow surviving through them and enticing all the drug dealers into puppy love, and it's nice to see her in a position she can't get out of. Except then she'll probably die.
Andy confesses his love for her in a blurt-it-out way, but she responds that she's pregnant. This sends him into a depression for the rest of the episode and he spills to Silas and Doug about the baby. Silas and Shane get out their fury at their mother in the only way they can, by fist fighting one another, and Nancy sends Shane to her sister in Oakland. To 'keep him safe.' You really should have thought of that before you got involved with a mobster, Nancy. Shut up. Silas plans to plant his bushes somewhere in the forest, so he and Doug go to out some land. This leaves Nancy completely alone with her problems, and although a random flashmob dance party makes her smile again, she sees Esteban's groupie Cesar watching her. Then she remembers she's totally screwed.

In the funniest storyline of the episode, Quinn and her boyfriend Rudolfo try to call everyone and get them to ransom Celia. Eveeeeeryone. Nancy, Dean, Andy, Doug, even the FBI agent, and they all basically say she can go to hell. Quinn then plans to sell her mother's organs, but Celia had chemo radiation so it's no go. She manages to bond with Rudolfo and get Quinn kicked out, but where it goes from here no one knows. Celia, I'd ransom you. You're the best part of the show!
This was an excellent opening to season 5. Funny, smart, cruel, and more than a little scary for Nancy. Here's hoping she learns from her mistakes this time, but no doubt she'll manage to sail through somehow. Next week, Guillermo!
"Weeds" is on Showtime Monday nights at 10:00 PM EST.
