Johnny Carson left "The Tonight Show" with an intimate hour reflecting on his decades as the host. Jay Leno has offered cryptic hints about the send-off he plans to give himself when he wraps The Tonight Show at the end of May.
"I have something really unusual and different planned something really out of left field that we're going to end on," Leno said. "It's something really personal and really unusual. Well, it seems unusual but it's just really different and it has to do with our show and our staff and I think it'll make people smile. It'll be interesting. I don't want to give it away but we have something kind of different planned."
Well, you can't just leave us with that. What, are you going to bring your wife out or something? "No, I'm sorry to disappoint you. No, we're not going to renew our vows on the air or anything like that. I mean, she'll be at the show, but no, that's not it. No, it's just interesting. I think people will like it. I think it's just something you don't think of when you see these kinds of shows."
Don't worry, it's not going to get sappy and emotional either. "Have I planned an emotional spontaneous moment? No, no, no. It's kind of fun. It's a celebration. I mean it's a good time. I've had a wonderful time doing this and I'm off the air for less time than the writer's strike. Then we come back in September with something a little bit different."
"The Tonight Show" airs at 11:35 on NBC.
