Julianne Moore broke down in tears on national TV on Tuesday as she remembered her late mom.

The actress' mother Ann Love Smith died suddenly at the end of April and Moore is still devastated by the loss. When talk show host Ellen Degeneres offered The Hours star her condolences on her daily show, Moore teared up.

As DeGeneres reached for her guest's hand, the actress said, "I don't want to fall apart on television but I'd said I wanted to do this show because my mother was always happy to see me on TV - like anybody's mother - so I thought she would have liked it, and she loved you."

Moore cancelled a string of TV appearances to promote her new children's book Freckleface Strawberry after her mother's death on April 29th.
