Anne Hathaway looks wonderful in all of her magazine pictures, especially when you consider that she's sporting more weight on her shoulders than most actors in Hollywood today. That's because she will play Judy Garland in a bio-picture based on the controversial book by Gerald Clark.
Hathaway is, of course, perfect for the role. Never mind that she can't quite copy the kind of 4-year-old face that became trademark Garland. That's one of those remarkable traits that can't be duplicated. She still has the pouting lips, the miraculous smile, and the charming singing voice. Her face might be more reminiscent of Judy Garland's famous daughter, Liza Minnelli, but that will make only marginal difference on the silver screen. If they can turn Joaquin Phoenix into Johnny Cash then turning Hathaway into Garland is as simple as adding a dash of sugar.
The dividing issue on "Get Happy" is perfectly represented by the double entendre of its title. Gerald Clark's book has received mixed reviews regarding its clear slant in the direction of Garland's behind-the-scenes tabloid lifestyle, which was everything that her on-stage glamour wasn't, and left her with a legacy that defines both the dream and the nightmare of Hollywood. "Get Happy" seems to revel in the shady side to a point where many see his book as complete trash, playing up the dirty angles with anonymous sources and speculation.
Even giving Clark the benefit of the doubt, it's clear that the story of Judy Garland is more controversially divided than that of Johnny Cash or Ray Charles or even Notorious B.I.G. whose lives were clear reflections of the art that they produced. Anne Hathaway will be challenged to step into the world of Judy Garland, and just as Notorious received much criticism for being overwhelmingly lenient on the rapper, "Get Happy" could be subject to criticism from both sides.
In the end, "Get Happy" will either be seen as the cultural capstone to Judy Garland's achievement as one of our most beloved fallen stars or it will be seen as an insult to those who still adore her. And heading up this tight rope walk is Anne Hathaway, all smiles.
