'American Idol' Week 5 Banter: Top 36 Drama
Wednesday night's episode, the one that determined the Top 36, was absolutely riddled with MD. To get you caught up with the episode's concept, the contestants were brought to a mansion where they would have a one-on-four meeting with the judges. It was then up to the judges (with a lot of help from the producers) to leave each prospective "Idol" waiting with bated breath before hearing whether or not they'll be a part of the esteemed Top 36.
The first example of MD came when Adam Lambert sat down in front of the judges. Let's not over-think things, Lambert is a lock to make the Top 36. He's a good-looking guy who dresses well, has an edgy haircut, and can really sing. Yet his reward for auditioning so well was Simon Cowell saying, "It's not good news [long pause with Lambert looking tense], it's great news."

Whoa! Good one! Whew, I was really sweating it out for about one millisecond. Too bad the other three judges weren't on board with that moment of MD, but they were all sitting there with huge smiles as Simon "broke" the news to the "unsuspecting" Lambert.
The second example of MD occurred with clear frontrunner, Lil Rounds. She took a seat in front of the judges, but this time it was Randy Jackson's turn to tear her down a little, saying that her Hollywood auditions were "up and down." Simon then explained to her that making decisions at this point in the show are very difficult and there are a lot of things to consider when putting someone in the Top 36. "You should think about that when we tell you what's happened," Simon says.
Cut to Kara DioGuardi trying to suppress a smile: "Lil [long pause], you're going through!"
Lil Rounds. Hometown: Memphis, TN. Currently Resides: Memphis, TN. Age: 24. CR: Michael Becker/ FOX.
Look, I get it. A television show like "American Idol" needs to cut some corners and keep people interested. But do we really need a heaping helping of MD when it comes to the clear best people? I don't even think MD would be an issue if they strictly used the technique on borderline contestants.
Take Ricky Braddy, for instance. Up until this episode, I had never seen him (or have no memory of him, which is just as bad). Why couldn't they use some MD on his meeting with the judges? It would've been a lot more riveting to see some random person sweat a little before making the Top 36 than to try and watch them make Danny Gokey uncomfortable.
Daniel Gokey. Hometown: Milwaukee, WI. Currently Resides: Milwaukee, WI. Age: 28. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.
One more example, and I'll wrap this thing up. Granted, I pay a lot more attention than the show's casual viewer, but that doesn't excuse the final case of MD that happened when Michael Sarver and Matt Breitzke were forced into a sing-off with about three minutes left in the show.
I looked down at my notepad and noticed that 34 people had already been put through to the Top 36. Wait a minute! Sarver and Breitzke are going to make it! So "Idol's" attempt at a walk-off home run had no effect on yours truly. HA!
Left: Michael Sarver. Hometown: Jasper, TX. Currently Resides: Jasper, TX. Age: 27
Right: Matt Breitzke. Hometown: Bixby, OK. Currently Resides: Bixby, OK. Age: 28. CR: Chris Cuffaro / FOX.
Moral of the story: Don't pay this much attention to TV shows. It kills the fun. Looks like the joke is on me.
Does anyone have any idea who these contestants are? I swear that last night was the first time they were even on camera...
- Ricky Braddy
- Stevie Wright
- Allison Iraheta
- Kris Allen
- Jeanine Vailes
- Jesse Langseth
TOP 36 NOTE
Joanna Pacitti was removed from the Top 36. The following statement was put on the "American Idol" website: "Note: It has been determined that Joanna Pacitti is ineligible to continue in the competition. Felicia Barton has replaced Ms. Pacitti as part of the Top 36." The reason, according to the Associated Press, is that Pacitti "had a record deal with Geffen and released an album in 2006."
