Multiple Grammy-award winning singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan makes her long-awaited debut on the PBS series "Austin City Limits" February 14th, following the release of her greatest hits collection, Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan.
McLachlan has sold over 40 million albums worldwide during her 20-year recording career, which began with the release of her debut album Touch. She was brought to the national spotlight in 1997 with the release of her landmark fifth album, Surfacing, which featured two Grammy Award-winning tracks: "Building a Mystery" which won for Best Female Pop Vocal and "Last Dance," voted Best Pop Instrumental.
That same year, McLachlan founded the legendary Lilith Fair, which catapulted the platform of women in music as well as raising millions for various charities. In addition to Lilith Fair, McLachlan has continued her works of charity by founding the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach Program which provides free music education classes to inner city youths whose school music programs have been reduced or abolished by budget cuts. McLachlan's most publicly notable cause is her involvement in the PSA for the ASPCA which has raised over 30 million dollars since it began airing.
"Few voices can compare to Sarah McLachlan, so her first-ever appearance on "Austin City Limits" was a milestone for the show," said ACL producer Terry Lickona. "Accompanied only by Luke Doucet and Melissa McLelland on guitar and vocals, her performance had an intimacy that is almost never seen on television."
Sarah McLachlan's ACL set list: "Building a Mystery", "Possession", "Adia", "U Want Me 2", "World on Fire", "Angel", "Ice Cream".
The second half of this ACL episode belongs to the burgeoning Welsh soul singer Duffy, whose debut album Rockferry just earned a Grammy in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album.
"Duffy is the latest 'northern soul' import, and her robust, soulful voice sounds retro and very contemporary at the same time. She's sweet and sassy in a way that charmed the ACL audience the minute she walked onstage," Lickona said.
While earning comparisons to artists like Dusty Springfield and Amy Winehouse, Duffy and has electrified both critics and fans with Rockferry. Boasting the hit single "Mercy," the album has sold more than five million copies worldwide.
The 23-year-old began her journey through America at the 2008 South By Southwest Music Festival and then returned to Austin for her triumphant debut on "Austin City Limits".
