It's almost hard to believe more than four years has passed since our favorite Tree Hill days. Those days introduced us to the passion of Brooke, the heartache of Peyton and the love of Lucas. They filled our voids with excitement and allowed us a way to escape to another dimension -- well maybe not another dimension, but Tree Hill, North Carolina worked just fine.
Monday night's episode of "One Tree Hill" launched the ever-anticipated auditions for Lucas' movie, An Unkindness of Ravens. With Reese now on board as Director, all that was left to do was cast the right characters to portray Lucas' story. Thankfully, this episode did more than just supply avid fans with the usual chuckle -- it gave us the chance to truly see how much each character has developed since their high school journey (as well as their real acting skills!)
When it comes to the Naley clan, I'll spare everyone the obvious. These two became lovers and parents at such a young age, it was almost impossible to not mature into responsible adults. Nathan's drive to overcome his injury and earn a role in the NBA was as inspiring as a soap-drama can be. After Nathan revealed his honest opinion of Devon's lack of team spirit, Nathan was promoted to a starting role on his basketball team. Unfortunately, Nathan was under the impression Devon was benched rather than cut from the team. After seeing Devon in his father role, Nathan attempted to enlist Devon back onto the team, but his coach told him the decision was final. Although Devon being cut may have come as a surprise, it surely wasn't Nathan's fault. Bottom line, Nathan can empathize when it comes to family values and he wouldn't have thrown Devon under the bus, regardless of him being a nice guy or a team threat. Nathan is not the same guy he was in high school. The ups and downs life has thrown him these past four years have led him down a road that can only lead to success.
Over the course of the school year, Haley has shown Sam not only what it means to be a role model, but a pathway to true success. Despite butting heads in the past, Sam has proven that with time comes hard work, and with hard work comes a winning essay. Haley's cute little stunt to scare Sam into thinking she did something wrong led to utter praise for the intelligent student. Haley's determination to print Sam's inspiring essay in the Tree Hill High School newspaper drew the attention of the intimidating school principal. Labeling it a future problem for both students and concerned parents, the principal ordered Haley to choose another essay or risk losing her job. Did anyone have any doubt that Haley would defy her boss' wishes and print the essay anyway? Good for Haley to make a stand!
Lucas' stress levels continued to elevate as the auditions continued. When it came to casting the role of Peyton, Lucas became defensive. (As he should!) On one hand, Reese sought the stereotypical blonde bombshell with big boobs and the goal of sleeping with the cast. On the other hand, Lucas wanted to find a true actress who was capable of grasping what it meant to be Peyton. To understand who she was, what her goals were and how she overcame such despair. The decision turned into a debate: Peyton #1 vs. Peyton #3. Finally, the answer became clear when Peyton #3 expressed in interest in the role...and her easiness in bed. Peyton #1 it is! Despite his booked schedule and stressful tasks at hand, Lucas never lost sight of what was important in his life. Keeping his priorities straight, Lucas showed up just in time for Peyton's doctor appointment, taking her words and breath away simultaneously.
Over the course of the season, Brooke has shown her adult side more than anyone else. She's overcome adversity with her lunatic mother, ran a million dollar business, cared for a sick infant and took on the demanding job of being a role model to a homeless teenager. Her sporadic outbursts of anger to various people may hint to the old Brooke's ways, but bottom line, the girl has matured way beyond her years.
Dan Scott has gone above and beyond to try and convince others he is not the killer he was years back. Now troubled with a heart problem, Dan's final days are ticking away and his attempt at starting anew has slowly evolved. Haley and Nathan have grown comfortable with allowing little Jamie to create a relationship with his Grandpa. Nathan doesn't fly off the handle everytime Dan makes a random appearance and not even the doctor changes his attitude toward the once incarcerated Tree Hill mayor. When Jamie invited his new "crush" Lauren, who happened to be his teacher, over to Dan's beach house, Jamie accused his grandfather of teasing him in order to win Lauren's heart. For once in his life, Dan turned down the chance to get to know a woman and apologized to his best friend.
What were your thoughts of the movie auditions? Did they choose the right people? Will Nathan prove himself in the starting basketball role? What will happen to Haley's job?
