Drew Barrymore finds it hard to comprehend what it's like to be in a normal relationship - because she had such an unconventional upbringing.
The actress' parents divorced when she was a tot and she found it hard to rebuild a normal relationship with her mother and father after they split. And Barrymore is sure their parting so early in her life had an influence on the romances she has had since.
She tells Britain's OK! Magazine, "I've never really understood how I should feel or behave in a relationship. I didn't have the kind of childhood which would have given me any perspective on what a happy home life or relationship would feel like. My father was literally out of his mind and my mother was more like a friend. She'd take me out to clubs and I wound up feeling like part of this very unreal kind of world, although that was the only world I ever knew growing up."
The 33-year-old has enjoyed a string of long-term relationships and has been married twice - a one-month union in 1994 to a Welsh bar owner and a 15- month marriage to comedian Tom Green in 2001. And her failed nuptials have had a lasting effect on the Charlie's Angels star, who would love to settle down.
Barrymore adds, "It left me without any bearings when it came to how to live in general. That obviously affects you in terms of everything else you're going to experience. So I haven't had as much happiness or success in my past relationships as I would have liked. What's helped me is having really good and close friends who I've always been able to rely on."
