Punk pranks left Elvis Costello with a nasty taste in his mouth and his shoes on fire during his heyday as an angry young man. The rocker and his group The Attractions were on tour in Belgium with The Damned and The Clash when he learned never to fall asleep on the road.

He recalls, "I, maybe unwisely, drank about 15 Pernods, fell asleep and woke up to find my mouth, which had obviously fallen open, (used as) an ashtray and my shoelaces on fire."
