Recap 'America's Next Top Model': Now You See Me, Now You Don't

For the girls of America's Next Top Model, seven was not a lucky number. This week's episode showcased probably the most animosity and intolerance since Hannah and Isis were eliminated.
Elina and Marjorie bonded over their European background and inability to be okay with expressing emotion. Samantha and Sheena saw this as a cop-out. They kept asking, well haven't you been in America long enough, haven't you gotten used to this culture? This was seen as such an insult to Marjorie and Elina. The house, in Sheena's words, became divided between "good and evil" from that point on. The "Americans" versus "the foreigners" or something crazy like that. It even went so far as cattily rooting against one another in both the challenge and commercial shoot this week.
The challenge was like nothing you've ever seen - literally. The girls were dressed in Nony Tochterman designs and green spandex body suits. Why you ask? To cover the girls' faces and bodies in order to best showcase the clothing. The challenge winner would be the model who made the clothes the star, instead of herself. But of course, there had to be drama. Elina started feeling claustrophobic in her body suit and Marjorie's dress fell down to her waist. Sheena twirled too much and Joslyn made her runway walk look like a strip show. But, despite the initial bad feelings, Elina was proclaimed the challenge winner, much to the other girls' dismay. As a prize for winning, Elina was chosen to do a Christmas shoot for Seventeen magazine and brought along Analeigh and Marjorie (her fellow foreigner, of course) to share her prize. Samantha and Sheena both felt Elina was very undeserving of her reward. "She's an atheist, she doesn't even like holidays!" Samantha said. Sheena went so far as to call Elina a hypocrite to her face.
Meanwhile, poor Joslyn was getting sick and losing faith in her ability to perform. But, all the girls' had to forget their personal squabbles and problems and be ready to perform their first commercial shoot. This commercial was directed by Frank Ockenfels and featured Cover Girl eye shadow and mascara. It looks like the producers of ANTM wanted to save time, money and potentially film by giving the girls a teleprompter to read their lines. Unfortunately by doing that, it took away the ability to laugh at the girls' ineptness for memorization. The competitors were only given 5 takes to do their commercial perfectly…and even then some still struggled.
Someone who didn't struggle, though, was Analeigh. She was pronounced the best commercial this week, and by Tyra, "The best Cover Girl commercial in Top Model history." Wow, those are some pretty big words to live up to. But, her commercial did look beautiful.
Paulina Porizkova pointed out that while Analeigh hasn't always had the best pictures, she definitely did the commercial well. Tyra and Paulina then came to an agreement that none of the girls this cycle were good at doing both commercial and editorial; the only solution was for Tyra and Paulina to come out of retirement and model themselves. It just wouldn't be an episode of Top Model if Tyra's ego didn't make a guest appearance.
Sheena took the runner-up position, which is a nice jump from being in the bottom two last week. The director felt that she was the only one who was fluid throughout the whole commercial. Nigel Barker agreed saying the way Sheena presents herself comes very naturally across on a camera. Sheena was ecstatic.
Sheena's comrade in the house Samantha was the next to be called. Even though some of the judges felt she mumbled her words during the commercial, they overall felt Samantha's very likable persona on screen. Once Sheena and Samantha were safe to live another day, they kept hoping (aloud) that Elina would be the one to leave the picture.
Marjorie's awkward nature made her likable, yet again, and she made it through elimination. The judges commented that her head bobbled like a chicken and that her commercial was too rushed. She definitely fell from her top spot last week, but didn't fall far enough to leave.
I think McKey's commercial was probably one of the worst in the bunch. The judges' agreed with me too. She just doesn't look like someone I'd listen to about makeup; plus, I've never liked her haircut since makeovers. Jay Manuel at the shoot said she was completely clueless and "did not have the makings of a Cover Girl." Guess that's why she was so close to the bottom this week.
That just leaves Joslyn and Elina in the bottom two. Joslyn spent her day at the commercial shoot puking into a trashcan. She fought through the sickness and performed…decently. "She overdid it," according to Jay. Paulina thought the way her arms moved was annoying; Tyra said Joslyn's voice and laugh sounded fake. Elina's critique was no surprise - she was holding back. Her commercial was boring and flat. She didn't look great either. Elina said she was tired of hearing that she wasn't giving it her all, but if that's the case she should start changing something and stop complaining.
Tyra decided that Joslyn was a survivor, and would survive being eliminated…much to everyone's surprise. Even Elina thought she was going home. But, Elina made it to try and "let go" another day. Tyra told Joslyn she couldn't give her pity points for doing the commercial sick and that she had to be truthful on who should stay. I know Joslyn should have been eliminated awhile back, and I even predicted her to be eliminated tonight, but it is a shame. It's one of those times I have to wonder if the producers stepped in and said, "Hey, if you keep Elina on the show there will be more drama in the house." It's good the girls are headed to Amsterdam next week; I don't think LA is big enough for the cat fight that's about to ensue.
