New York is apparently not big enough for both Serena (Blake Lively) and Blair (Leighton Meester); they have to start fighting over Connecticut as well. Like in every good teen soap, the main characters are destined to go to the same college. It may not be time for acceptance letters yet, but the crew of Gossip Girl is set on visiting (if not dreaming of attending) Yale.
Of course, with the high standards of the private hoity-toity prep schools the gang attends, its no wonder that the school sets up weekend visits to Ivy League schools like Brown, Harvard, Yale and Princeton. Serena had originally planned to visit Brown for the weekend (her mother's alma mater) but her plans changed once Blair came into the picture. Insulting Serena's intelligence and her choice of school was just the beginning of this week's insane and over-the-top catfight.
Once arriving at Yale, each individual has a different goal in mind. Chuck's (Ed Westwick) is to find the secret society, Nate (Chace Crawford) would rather go to USC and is just at Yale for the pretty girls (one of which he finds), Blair is set on getting an invite to the Dean's private dinner party and Serena shows up to ruin Blair's game.
Nate, who seems to be up to his elbows in woman drama this season, pretends to be Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) once pressed for his name from the pretty girl. Nate is basically black-listed at Yale because of his father's indiscretions. Unfortunately for Nate, Dan's interview with the Dean didn't go so well and found out he was lacking a letter of recommendation. This sent him on a wild goose chase for a particular T.A. who could potentially help him get that letter. This T.A. and Nate's new interest are, big shocker, the same person. The truth of the mistaken identity comes out and it looks like Nate is out of luck on getting lucky.
Chuck was abducted by the secret society of Yale and they required two things from him: a party and Nate Archibald. Chuck bought some skanky strippers to come play, but little did the secret society know, they were armed with lipstick cameras for easy access in acquiring incriminating evidence against the guys. Also, Chuck played a mind trick of his own, leading the guys to Dan Humphrey instead of Nate, but telling them he was Nate so Dan would take the beating for Nate's daddy losing all their trust funds.
Unfortunately, the tables turned for Chuck. Even though he gained control of the secret Yale society members with photographic evidence, he seemed to have lost a friend in Nate who felt sorry for Dan taking his beating. Dan and Nate were seen leaving together to take the train back home to New York while Chuck was left with his driver, all alone, as usual.
But, those fights are nothing compared to Serena and Blair. After a shaky interview and realizing that Serena got invited to the Dean's special dinner and she did not, Blair took it upon herself to bribe the secretary (wow, that's so unlike her…) for an invitation. Once at the party, the girls started to argue about the Dean's little "who would you like to eat dinner with" question; considering the answer determines early admission I guess it was okay to go all psycho on one another. First, Serena stole Blair's practiced answer. Then, Blair changed Serena's answer to the name of the boy who she thought she killed (or maybe she did kill him…that's still up in the air, I believe). This led to the most ridiculous scene since the show's beginning. Blair and Serena excused themselves from the party, like good little Upper East Siders, only to rip each other's dresses, throw purses, and ironically be self aware. My favorite part was when Serena ripped off Blair's obnoxious headband bow and said, "I hate your stupid headband!!" It was probably the best part of the episode.
The catfight was highly anti-climatic, however. The girls decided that they were really just upset about potentially being separated next year when they attended different colleges. The Dean offered Serena early admittance, but probably wasn't sincere since he had all the tabloid pictures spread out on his desk. Serena decided to put her best friend, Blair, first (when has that ever happened the other way around?) and decline his offer. The two rode home together, seemingly at peace. But knowing Blair, I'm sure she has something up her sleeve.
While the seniors are debating on which college to attend, Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) is debating on whether or not to go back to high school. After the success at Fashion Week, Jenny is a much treasured commodity of Eleanor Waldorf Designs. Jenny decided to try and prove to her father, Rufus (Matthew Settle), how influential she is by letting him spend a day with her at work. At the end of the day, he could decide whether or not she should go back to her regular school or possibly consider home-schooling. After some slight convincing from Lily van der Woodsen-Bass (Kelly Rutherford), Jenny wins out. This also sheds some light on the potential for Jenny to start her own spin off show when she goes to some children's professional fashion school. In the Gossip Girl book series, Jenny left and started the "It Girl" series…so we'll see if Josh Schwartz has that in the works.
