Mafia classic The Godfather has beaten Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back to be named the greatest movie of all time in a new poll.

Director Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film, which starred Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, topped Britain's Empire magazine survey to find the best picture ever. More than 10,000 movie fans, critics and filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino and Mike Leigh, took part in the poll.

Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Lost Ark came in second place, and the 1980 Star Wars film came third.
