Tom CruiseTom Cruise cannot understand why his movie Valkyrie has attracted so much criticism - because it's such an "important" story.

The actor insists the movie - which tells the true story of a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler during World War II - will be a box office hit after wowing audiences at a test screening earlier this month.

He says: "It (the criticism) just doesn't make sense to me either. The moment I read the screenplay I knew it was an important story, and as it's a true tale of heroic resistance to one of the great villains of history, I can't imagine that people won't want to see it."

Valkyrie, starring Cruise alongside actors Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, and comedian Eddie Izzard, is due to hit cinemas on December 26th.
