Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube is planning to co-produce and star in a movie adaptation of beloved 1970s sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.

The show ran from 1975 to 1979 and starred comedian Gabriel Kaplan as a former student who returns to his New York high school to teach a group of tearaway kids. John Travolta, who played one of the unruly pupils, is tipped for a cameo alongside Cube, who will play teacher Kotter.

The rap star, real name O'Shea Jackson, says, "There was no bigger fan (of that show) than me. (I'm) very excited to be able to put a new twist on it."
