Pop star George Michael was relieved to be caught propositioning a cop in a Los Angeles public bathroom - because it forced him to finally reveal he was gay.

Ten years on from his infamous 1998 arrest, the singer admits his recklessness was deliberate. He was charged with lewd conduct, pleaded no contest and was ordered to pay a fine and complete community service.

He explains, "It was a very eventful and bizarrely dark period for me that I thought was going to go on forever. It was a huge relief and it took me about a year to admit to myself that I had done it, deliberately. The truth is, cruising has gone on for as long as there have been men trying to hide their sexuality."
