Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page has decided to contest his charge of cocaine possession, despite allegedly admitting to police he was snorting the drug before his arrest last week.
Court documents, filed with the Fayetteville Village Court in New York, say the singer was arrested on Friday after police found him and 25-year-old Stephanie Ford in an apartment in Manlius, New York, with what appeared to be cocaine.
In a police statement, Ford said the two had just finished snorting what she believed to be cocaine with a rolled-up Canadian bill.
Another court document quotes Page as saying, "Yeah, it's cocaine" to officers who asked him to identify the substance.
Page and Ford were then taken into police custody and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. They were both released after posting $10,000 bail.
But a brief message posted on Barenaked Ladies' website this week claims Page will plead not guilty to the charge in his forthcoming trial and that "the validity of the charges against Steven will be strongly contested."
The notice thanks fans for their support, adding: "While this is happening, it's business as usual for Barenaked Ladies. We will continue to perform and look forward to heading into the studio later this year to record a new album. We want to thank our loyal fans for their continued support during this difficult time."
Authorities allege Page had a third of an ounce of cocaine on his person at the time of his arrest. Page and Ford were taken into police custody, but was later released after posting $10,000 bail.
Page is scheduled to appear in a New York court on August 26. He faces a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted.
