The Who star Pete Townshend has criticized the digital music industry for alienating fans - labeling the process of internet downloading "heartless".

Although the rocker admits that the way companies such as iTunes have capitalized on digital downloads is very clever, he much prefers the old fashioned system of buying a CD from a music shop.

He says, "iTunes simply doesn't have heart. It is software attached to a bank, nothing more, nothing less. Brilliant, but heartless."
