Alec BaldwinActor Alec Baldwin has persuaded New York City officials to reconsider placing a ban on New York's famous horse-drawn carriage trade.

The native New Yorker appeared at a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) event just last month to campaign against the industry. He believes the frantic streets of New York are no place for nervous animals to haul around heavy carriages. City officials have confirmed seven accidents and two traffic-related horse deaths have resulted from the carriage trade in the last three years.

Brooklyn Councilman Tony Avella tells the New York Post: "My first inclination was to try to find a way to do a better job. But I (now see) that... to make a profit, there's no way for them to treat the horses properly."

Baldwin joins Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde and pop star Pink, who have both campaigned for PETA against horse-drawn carriages.
