It was the third week of "So You Think You Can Dance" featuring the top 16. Four dancers have been callously slung aside so far, and it looks like two more are going to join their ranks before the end of the long three hours.
Adam Shankman, the choreographer for "Hairspray" the movie and a favorite of the show, is the guest judge this week. He is the most supportive of the judges and also the most critical. Jordin Sparks, the American Idol, is the performer for the results show as well as a wonderful dance routine done by the dance crew Qwest. It is no surprise Qwest is amazing and on the show considering that three of its members - Hok, Dominic, and Ryan - were all contestants before. Let's get into the dances, the dancers, and the eliminated couple.
Kherington and Twitch are up first with a hip hop routine that everyone loves. It's about a prison break, and they are as hilarious and charming as ever. The judges love them, and they even got a scream from Mary. Adam suggested that Twitch help Kherington with her chest pops, but he loved them as well. No surprise this couple was safe; I voted for them!
Gev and Courtney are up next, and they are going to do a rumba. I always forget it is slow, so when it starts out like molasses it throws me off. Gev is clearly infatuated with his dance partner, and it is adorable. Nigel compares him to Dominic of last season, which is a real compliment since Dom got so far on the show. Courtney was only wearing half a dress, but it was a great dance and they are safe from elimination.
Comfort and Chris are doing a jazz piece, and this means it has to be personality, personality, personality. Comfort has that in spades, but Chris continues to be a smiling tree. It's African Jazz, but apparently Marilyn Manson passes for the same music. Oookay. In any case, it could have been very animalistic and primal, but the duo does not pull it off at all. The audience obviously didn't feel it since the two of them are in the bottom three.
Will and Jessica are doing disco, and Jessica hopes to show that she is not just in Will's shadow. This is probably impossible, since he casts a very long one in his astounding dance technique. The disco choreographer Doriana is annoyed at Jessica's ditzy behavior, but she seems to pull off the dance itself. They are both safe, and she earns a little more praise this week than her partner. Will made a mistake and Jessica covered for him, which was very sweet.
Matt and Kourtni are doing contemporary from a new choreographer named Sonja who has a big Mohawk and seems a little quirky. They do this strange dance routine about two comic book characters flirting and fighting. It was cute, but not really up to par. The judges liked it, but Nigel pointed out the audience probably would not like it due to its strange quality. He was right, and they are in the bottom three.
Chelsea and Thayne are doing the quick step, and the only thing I can think of during the routine is how much Pasha did it better last season. They execute the moves well, but there is no personality in it and they grin like creepy fake masks the entire time. The judges are critical with Nigel saying it is too bouncy, Mary takes them off the hot tamale train, and Adam points out they have to perform better. It is no surprise when they are in the bottom.
Chelsie and Mark are the cutest odd couple on this show, and they are doing a hip hop routine with Napoleon and Tabitha. It is a story about a workaholic and his wife trying to keep his attention. It is well performed and acted by them both, with Chelsie especially shining in character, and everyone enjoyed the dance. The voters did too, so those two are safe.
Katee and Joshua are the last up, and Joshua is quickly becoming my crush on the show. He has this really laid back quality with a toothy endearing smile. He is a hip hop dancer and yet far better at this Latin samba than one would expect. Katee seduces him and is sweet although a little too cutesy, but overall it was memorable and sexy. The judges joke around about Joshua's father who is in the audience and looks exactly like him. These two are very, very safe.
At the end it is between Kourtni, Chelsea, and Comfort. Chelsea is very coldly and directly asked to leave, and the judges do not even analyze her skills or offer advice. Icy. Matt, Thayne and Chris are all similar dances, but it is the end for Chris the Tree. The judges point out the other bottom dwellers must learn how to charm the audience if they are to keep going in the competition. Next week, the Top 14!
