'So You Think You Can Dance': Jaime & Ravyn Are Sent Home

So You Think You Can DanceThe first official week of "So You Think You Can Dance" has started, and the crowd was screaming louder than Mary Murphy ever could!

After several weeks of excruciating auditions and a tough run in Vegas, 20 dancers remain: 10 girls and 10 boys. The judges are Mary and Nigel Lythgoe as usual, with Dan Karaty as the guest judge. The structure of the show is this: each dance couple picks a routine and performs it live, then after a vote from the viewers the bottom three couples dance solos. The judges critique each one of them, and then decide who goes home. Very few of the dancers this time around are memorable from the auditions, but it is early yet.

First up was Ravyn, who said she is the oldest dancer this year, and her partner Jaime who is a West Coast swing dancer. They danced to hip hop. It was a very cute routine, but as Mary pointed out, it is "cotton candy" hip hop. Nigel feared it will not be memorable. Uh oh. These two did turn out to be in the bottom three.

Next was blonde school teacher Susie partnering with sweet faced Marquis. They danced a smooth waltz to some truly beautiful music ("Dark Waltz" by Hayley Westenra), but did not quite make the lift at the end. It was a lovely dance, and the judges all agreed that they made a few mistakes but overall were great. Nigel feared that the audience would not like it as much as the faster paced routines, but he turned out to be wrong as the two of them are safe in the result show.

Kourtni left high school at 16 to study dancing, and her partner Matt is the tallest person in the group at 6'3. They did a jazz routine from Mandy Moore to the song "Tainted Love," and it was not very impressive. Nigel and Mary were full of praise, but Dan made the most sense when he said they have to perform a lot more passionately. Matt was called out on having a bland personality. No surprise that they were in the bottom three.

Chelsea T's family is from Jamaica, and Thayne quit dancing as a boy because he was taunted too much. They picked the cha-cha, and just heated up the floor with their routine. Wowza. Her outfit was gorgeous and he hammed it up a little, but it was charming. The judges loved them, I loved them, and the audience loved them too since they were safe.

Chelsie Hightower was one of the few dancers I remember from auditions. She was partnered with Mark from Hawaii, who had difficulty with the contemporary choreography Mia Michaels gave them. She was afraid he would not be able to handle it, but he was alright. The piece was whimsical and they did a lot of lifts. As all Mia's routines, it was either great or awful depending on your taste. The two of them were safe.

Twitch! It is so exciting to see him on the stage. He did not make it last year as they took Hok instead, but he is a fantastic hip hop dancer. He danced with cute as a button Kherington and they made up the name "Twitchington." They ended up doing a very energetic and fun Broadway routine and were just fantastic. It is no surprise they were safe.

Comfort, the female hip hop dancer, was hilarious, and she was partnered with personality-of-a-tree Chris. He wanted to prove he had personality, but it was difficult not to show something while dancing the fast-paced jive. The judges revealed after that Comfort actually dislocated her shoulder during rehearsal, and that was probably their one-way ticket to safedom as the fans love a tough dancer.

Katee and Joshua were next, and Katee can be remembered as the girl who said she would quit trying if she did not get on the show this year. Oops. Joshua was a sports nut. They did a hip hop routine and were completely in sync with one another. Nigel said it was his favorite, and it was mine as well. They were very safe.

Jessica was the one who misspelled Vegas in the auditions, and Will was the wonderful Debbie Allen protégé. These two did a very sexy tango, and it was déjà vu from last season when they ended up in the bottom three. Anya and Danny were in the bottom several times even though they were clearly better dancers than most of the others. The judges were shocked.

Finally, Gev the popper did disco with New York Knicks dancer Courtney. They danced well enough, but there was absolutely no spark or life to their performance. It really is a shame as the disco routines have been so energetic in the past. They were safe for some unknown reason, but who can tell with fans anyway?

The guest performers in the result show were The Pussycat Dolls. Block it out of your memory forever. The final decision was that Jaime and Ravyn will go home, because the judges decided to give Matt a second chance to find a personality and Ravyn did not impress them with her solo. Who will be cut next week? You'll have to tune in next Wednesday and Thursday to find out!
