British singer/rapper M.I.A. has scrapped her U.K. tour - blaming her "insane" schedule for the cancellation.

The star - real name Mathangi Arulpragasam - announced her decision to put her U.K. tour on hiatus while performing at New York's McCarren Pool venue on Monday. And the singer feels it is time she took a break from performing live - insisting she needs to get back to her normal life in order to function as an artist.

She told New York magazine, "This is my last show. I cancelled the U.K. tour. Nobody knows. I'm cancelling because I feel like physically I just have to stop for a second. It's too insane. I was losing a sense of just, like, reality, you know what I mean?"

She adds, "I think for an artist like me, it's so important for me to be in the streets and go to the same shop every day and see the same people and, like, communicate." And the star says she won't be relaxing with her newly-found spare time - she is planning to release a new LP.

She says, "I've been writing on tour. I'm really into writing new songs. I'm going to put out a new record instead. At the end of the day, I'm here, you know."
