There is a mixture of excitement and tragedy in the air today, and it all involves "Lost." While there is an action-packed two hour season finale scheduled in two weeks, on May 29th, it signals the end of the phenomenal season four, and loyal fans will have to wait almost nine months for more. The pain is almost too much to handle, especially since it is common for "Lost" to end on cliffhangers that keep people excitedly talking for the entire huge break, and no answers will be forthcoming very soon. Noooooooo! Oh well. It is a small price to pay for the continued fantastical tale of the Oceanic survivors. This week's episode was part one of the finale, titled "There's No Place Like Home." All John Locke needs is a pair of ruby slippers and click his heels to move the Island, right?
Last episode, Frank threw a satellite phone out of the helicopter for the Beachies to find. Presumably it was to keep them away from the glowing dot that is evil Keamy's murderous crew, but Saint Jack decides to take his girl Friday - er Kate - and go after the signal. They meet up with Sawyer in the jungle with Miles and little maybe orphan Aaron, and Jack decides to ignore Sawyer's warnings about the soldier's destruction of Otherville. Kate and Miles return to the beach with Aaron, while Sawyer goes after Jack to watch his back. Together they find Frank chained up inside of the helicopter, and he tells them that the soldiers are headed to the Orchid to get Ben. Jack is all set to take the copter and return to the beach, but Sawyer points out that Hurley is still with Locke and Ben. "Son of a bitch," says Jack.
Locke, Ben and Hurley are on their way to the super secret Orchid greenhouse, when Ben finds a little hidden box with a mirror. He uses it to communicate to someone far up in the hills, and it is likely the missing Others since they come into play later. Keamy's group is already at the Orchid, however, and Ben very calmly explains to Locke how he is to get inside of the greenhouse, and take a secret elevator down to the 'real' Orchid. This will somehow help them move the Island. Locke looks as confused as we all have been for four seasons. Ben willingly hands himself over to Keamy, but with that whole smug creepy air of 'I am exactly where I want to be' that Michael Emerson pulls off so well.
Sayid is on his way back to the Island from the freighter, and he starts moving everyone onto the boat. Sun and Jin are the first to go over. Daniel and Charlotte discuss how the 'secondary protocol' means they have to get off the Island … now! Sayid goes back into the jungle with a returned Kate, and he allows Daniel to take the survivors six at a time back to the freighter, where Desmond and Michael await. A very awkward reunion scene is shown between Michael, Sun and Jin. Hey, didn't Michael almost kiss Sun once? Check out the Lost webisodes for an answer to that. They also found a huge amount of C4 down below. Sayid and Kate are apprehended by Richard and the Others within the jungle.
In the flash forward, the Oceanic Six arrive back on real world soil. They are greeted by family, except for Kate with baby Aaron and Sayid who gets hugged by Hurley's mother. What a good hearted family the Reyes are. At the press conference they answer general questions which are clearly all lies, and Nadia meets with Sayid for a touching if bittersweet reunion. There are a few other scenes, like Sun being completely amazing and buying out the majority share of her father's company, and Hurley finding that he cannot escape the numbers no matter what. Then, a scene in the works since "Par Avion," Jack finds out that Claire was in fact his sister at his father's official funeral, and he gives a shocked and slightly sickened look over at Aaron.
Phew. There was so much information crammed into that one hour that it is difficult to really remark on anything, since this is only one part of three. At the moment, it appears that Sayid, Kate, Jack, Frank and Sawyer are all headed to the Orchid along with the Others. It will be interesting to see what happens to the soldiers and whether they can match against the Others continued badassness. I am guessing Keamy is about to get his for Alex's unjust murder. It is unclear how the Oceanic Six will come together, and what keeps them apart from the others, but that is why this is far from over.
Get ready for some fireworks, "Lost" fans!
