Chaka Khan is standing by her son Damien as he recovers in a rehab center after allegedly killing his friend by accident, insisting he will one day be able to "live a good life."

In what Khan believes was a tragic accident, her son Damien Holland shot dead Christopher Bailey, 17, with an assault rifle during a 2004 argument in the singer's Los Angeles home.

Khan testified daily during the ensuing 2006 trial in support of her son, who was eventually acquitted.

And the R&B star insists she is continuing to support him as he undergoes psychological treatment at a facility.

She says, "With God's grace and God's help, at the trial the truth came out. But for Damien, there's a lot of pain and guilt, and he's been coping with that for the last couple of years. Right now, he's in rehab and getting all the spiritual and psychological help he will need. He's getting his tool belt full as I did, so that he can live a good and purposeful life of service and come out of that, and be able to live. Because it's tough when you feel responsible for the life of somebody else."
