NEW YORK (AP) - Eric Mabius, co-star of ABC's ''Ugly Betty,'' says he and his wife, interior designer Ivy Sherman, are expecting their second child. Mabius, who portrays playboy editor Daniel Meade on the comedy, told The Associated Press that Sherman surprised him with the news on the show's set last week.

''We don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet,'' Mabius said Wednesday. The couple has a 1-year-old son. Mabius said Sherman was ''very frustrated'' that she hadn't gotten pregnant before the Hollywood writers strike ended and thought that since ''Ugly Betty'' had resumed production, they'd have to wait until the summer break. ''I proved her wrong,'' he said, grinning.

Mabius, 37, has also appeared in the TV series ''The L Word,'' ''The O.C.'' and ''Eyes.''
