'American Idol' Gives Back, And Michael Johns Is Eliminated

American IdolTuesday night came and went. Host Ryan Seacrest introduced eight singers and three judges. Each performer chose an inspirational song to sing. As fast as it started, it ended. This week's "American Idol" could not compare to the hype and significance of Wednesday night's success of "American Idol Gives Back."

Why focus on Tuesday night's performances when one of the most popular reality shows dedicated two and half hours to raising money for poverty in the United States and Africa. Celebrities from all parts of the world displayed their compassion and generosity through their participation in the fundraiser.

Snoop Dogg opened the show with his hip hoppin' anthem "Can't Say Goodbye" and definitely got the crowd pumped. The effervescent Miley Cyrus and comical Billy Crystal created rippled laughter throughout the audience with their naïve outlook of the business separate from their own success. Robin Williams, who overacted his role as former "Russian Idol" Ivan Popinov, graced the stage with his contagious humor as well. The man definitely has guts, especially after he sexually grabbed Simon Cowell in an impromptu manner. Even talk show host Jimmy Kimmel shot insults Simon's way criticizing his inappropriate "revealing" clothing and his Moses-parted hair. But Simon was on his game and gave his typical priceless response: "Jimmy Kimmel, I'd just like to say how much I like the Jay Leno show."

Teri HatcherDespite Teri Hatcher's lackluster performance of Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats," the sensational country star came back on stage with an emotional rendition of George Michael's "Praying for Time." Fergie tore up the stage and impressed many with not only her vocals but with some pretty random one-handed cartwheels. She also teamed up with John Legend for their co-written song "Finally," before joining the ranks with Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson for a rockin' performance of "Barracuda."

Other stars popped up before and after commercials to encourage viewers to donate as little or as much as they possibly could. Among the announcers were Ben Stiller, Ellen DeGeneres, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, David Spade, Jim Carrey, Ricki Lake and many more! (Even this year's presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain, contributed their time and support during last night's elimination round).

But it was the heartfelt celebrity visits to particular destinations that did it for me.

Forest Whitaker and his wife traveled to the African communities and witnessed the severe effects of malaria. With tears in their eyes, I couldn't help but become overwhelmed with emotion. The reality brought to my eyes led me to donate to the cause in hopes to make a significant difference. In the end, "American Idol" helped raise $60 million in an effort to minimize poverty in the world. Though slightly less than last year's total donations, the money raised will ultimately benefit those suffering from the lasting effects of Hurricane Katrina and poverty.

Mariah CareyMariah Carey rounded out Wednesday night with a flawless performance of "Fly Like a Bird" complete with a full gospel chori and none other than Randy Jackson himself on bass. Aside from all of the jokes and musical performances, the Top 12 contestants (David Hernandez!) sat on stage answering phone calls for donations. Throughout the night, Ryan Seacrest weaved his way through to thank callers for their donations as well as update viewers on total money donated.

Unfortunately, last night's elimination did arrive and fans across the nation crossed their fingers in hopes it would mirror last year's show. One year ago, "American Idol" led the contestants to believe someone was going home, but ended up keeping them all. Before reading the results, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown took to the "American Idol" stage to perform their radio smash-hit "No Air." To Jordin's surprise, Ryan Seacrest and three fans surprised the former "American Idol" champion with three framed accolades displaying her musical success since her crowning last season.

But this year was indeed different. "American Idol" eventually said farewell to Michael Johns. Though consistent for several weeks, Johns' departure proved that while a song may mean something to you, it might not be the best song choice in the end.

Was Michael Johns' departure a shock to you? Seven contestants are left. Whose time is up - and who will stay?
