Rap star Plies has been dragged back into a shooting controversy at a Florida nightclub. The hitmaker - real name Algernod Washington - has been named in a lawsuit stemming from a 2006 incident in Gainesville.

Local lawyer Christopher Chestnut has filed a lawsuit at the Alachua County civil courthouse. In the legal papers, he alleges Plies showed negligence in his part in the shoot-out.

At the time, Gainesville Police reported that members of Plies' entourage pulled out guns and fired during one of his shows. The authorities arrested four people, including the rapper.

Plies later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of possession of a concealed weapon. His lawyer, Robert Rush, insists Chestnut's plaintiffs are suing the wrong person.

He states it is not his client's responsibility to provide security for fans at concerts.

Chestnut, who is representing five Gainesville residents injured at the concert, is seeking $10 million in damages. The attorney also names Slip-N-Slide Records and the 238 West nightclub, where the shootout took place, as defendants.
